Other Works
Sundry other types of commissioned artwork.
In this section I’ve compiled examples of sundry other types of artwork I’ve been commissioned to do over the years. While mostly concentrating on both Tolkien and architectural rendering (and more the former than the latter in recent years), I’ve also dabbled in such things as educational book illustration, non-fantasy book covers, two children’s books, occasional magazine covers and interior art, package illustration, occasional advertising art, as well as the odd bit of design work, to name some examples.
I’m particularly proud of the fairy tale, The Dream of Aengus, published by Fitzhenry & Whiteside and authored by Joanne Findon, a Canadian medieval scholar. Its 15 illustrations took some two years on and off to paint. This has been my one foray into traditional fairy tales to date, but surprisingly for me, it won an IODE book award. Normally the award is given to either the author or illustrator, but was split between the author and myself in this instance for the first time, since the judges felt that the collaboration was so successful. Ms Findon and I then went on to collaborate again for a children’s illustrated biography of poet Robbie Burns titled Auld Lang Syne; The Story of Robert Burns (F&W).
