The challenge was to create images of the protagonists which carry the essence of the descriptions Tolkien gives us. It needed the two opponents to seem dynamic and energized. This was easy enough with the Witch King’s dramatic entrance, whereas Gandalf is described as statue like, a sentinel between the enemy and the city. Using a low angle of view, and perspective, Gandalf increases in stature upon Shadowfax, and his glowing robe, as well the blue-burning staff, convey his power, in lieu of a billowing cloak. We see the great war hammer Grond beyond the shattered gates. Those gates, which at first seemed problematic, became part of the chaotic visage and menace of the Witch King. We also see Pippin hiding to the right, and the cock was added, despite being ‘offstage’ in the excerpt.
